Last week we were very excited to see our first butterflies of the season. A brimstone and we think a female orange tip. It is hard to be sure of the female orange tip as they don't have orange tips.
Now we have County Wildlife site status we are able to make use of the Bure Valley Conservation Group. We met with Jerry from BVCG to discuss improving the area to the south of the yurt. Aaron Brown from Norfolk Wildlife Trust tells us with good and continued management this will be a particularly fine example of tall fen meadow.
This is what it will begin to look like. We need to confirm dates but expect to do this with the volunteers in June. It needs to be cut with a reciprocating mower and the raked by
hand. Mary is very pleased she won't have to rake it by herself.
Steve managed to set up the moth trap after all this time. We were very pleased to see 2 moths on each occasion. This is far less than normal but at least something. A Peppered Moth Biston betularia, looking quite dramatic.
We have the inspector for our appeal to the Secretary of State coming to view the site on Tuesday 2 April. We are looking forward to and hoping for a favourable outcome.
Our next open day will be on Saturday 27 April 2024 so people can see how Blackwater Carr and we have coped with all the storms and floods.
